Dit is het verhaal — noodzakelijk kort en onvolledig — van de R.A.F. in den tweeden wereldoorlog. Het is het verhaal over hetgeen werd bereikt door de mannen en vrouwen, niet alleen in Brittannië en het Britsche Imperium, maar ook in al die Europeesche landen, die .den moed niet lieten zakken toen de onderdrukkers door de straten van hun steden marcheerden en hun dorpen plunderden. Het is ook het verhaal van duizenden jonge mannen, die, terwijl zij er hun leven voor riskeerden en het soms helaas verloren, uit bezet Europa ontsnapten en zich op weg begaven naar Engeland om te vechten en te vliegen in de Royal Air Force.

In de practijk bleek het een lange en moeilijke geschiedenis te zijn: jaren gingen voorbij voordat deze jonge mannen naar de landen konden terugkeeren, die zij hielpen bevrijden. Maar gedurende deze jaren verloren zij nooit hun vertrouwen ... en van allen, die in de R.A.F. vochten, waren er niet veel, die zoo'n groot vertrouwen en zoo'n standvastigen moed hadden als de Nederlanders. Hun taak was voornamelijk het weinig opvallende, doch noodzakelijke werk van Coastal Command (Kustbewakingsafdeeling): de Nederlanders, wier zeelieden tot de grootste der geschiedenis be-hooren, leverden dag in, dag uit hun bijdrage tot het eentonige, doch uiterst belangrijke patroui-leeren van de zeeën. De mannen, die de twee eerste eenheden vormden van den Koninklijken Nederlandschen Marine Luchtvaart Dienst, die later bekend werden als eren ontvluchtten uit Nederland of Nederlandsch-Indië om zich bij de Royal Air Force te voegen en opgeleid te worden, konden zij nog meer activiteit ontplooien. In het begin van den oorlog vochten zij boven Dieppe en namen deel aan de verdediging van Singapore en Java; later van bases in Australië en Ceylon en ook van Engeland uit; totdat eindelijk de Nederlandsche vliegers weer naar Europa terugkeerden en, na nog meer uitstekend werk in Frankrijk en België verricht te hebben, kwamen som¬migen van hen weer thuis, in Nederland.

This is the story - necessarily short and incomplete - of the R.A.F. in the Second World War. It is the story of the achievements of the men and women, not only in Britain and the British Empire, but also in all those European countries, who did not lose heart when the oppressors marched through the streets of their towns and villages. It is also the story of thousands of young men who, while risking their lives and sometimes sadly losing them, escaped from occupied Europe and made their way to England to fight and fly in the Royal Air Force.

In practice, it proved to be a long and difficult story: years passed before these young men could return to the countries they helped to liberate. But during these years they never lost their confidence ... and of all those who fought in the R.A.F. there were few who had such great confidence and such unwavering courage as the Dutch. Their task was mainly the unremarkable but necessary work of Coastal Command: the Dutch, whose sailors were among the greatest in history, contributed day in and day out to the monotonous but extremely important patrolling of the seas. The men who formed the first two units of the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Service, who later became known as fugitives from the Netherlands or the Dutch East Indies to join the Royal Air Force and be trained, were able to do even more activity. In the beginning of the war they fought over Dieppe and took part in the defence of Singapore and Java; later from bases in Australia and Ceylon and also from England; until finally the Dutch pilots returned to Europe and, after having done more excellent work in France and Belgium, some of them came back home, to Holland.

Voici l'histoire - nécessairement courte et incomplète - du R.A.F. pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. C'est l'histoire des réalisations des hommes et des femmes, non seulement en Grande-Bretagne et dans l'Empire britannique, mais aussi dans tous ces pays européens, qui n'ont pas perdu courage lorsque les oppresseurs ont défilé dans les rues de leurs villes et villages. C'est aussi l'histoire de milliers de jeunes hommes qui, au péril de leur vie et parfois malheureusement en la perdant, ont fui l'Europe occupée et se sont rendus en Angleterre pour combattre et voler dans la Royal Air Force.

Dans la pratique, l'histoire s'est avérée longue et difficile : des années ont passé avant que ces jeunes hommes puissent retourner dans les pays qu'ils ont contribué à libérer. Mais pendant ces années, ils n'ont jamais perdu leur confiance... et de tous ceux qui ont combattu dans la R.A.F., il y en a peu qui avaient une aussi grande confiance et un courage aussi inébranlable que les Hollandais. Leur tâche était principalement le travail banal mais nécessaire du commandement côtier : les Néerlandais, dont les marins étaient parmi les plus grands de l'histoire, contribuaient jour après jour à la patrouille monotone mais extrêmement importante des mers. Les hommes qui ont formé les deux premières unités du service aéronaval royal néerlandais, qui ont ensuite été connus comme des fugitifs des Pays-Bas ou des Indes orientales néerlandaises pour rejoindre la Royal Air Force et être formés, ont pu faire encore plus d'activités. Au début de la guerre, ils ont combattu au-dessus de Dieppe et ont pris part à la défense de Singapour et de Java ; plus tard, depuis les bases d'Australie et de Ceylon et aussi depuis l'Angleterre ; jusqu'à ce que finalement les pilotes néerlandais retournent en Europe et, après avoir fait un excellent travail en France et en Belgique, certains d'entre eux sont rentrés chez eux, en Hollande.
