Description: PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Born in Barnet in 1958, Martin Speake began playing saxophone at 16. In the early 1980s he was a founder member of the prize-winning sax quartet Itchy Fingers, which toured festivals and recorded for Virgin, with McCoy Tyner guesting on their first album. Speake subsequently worked with Django Bates, Stan Tracey and others on the London jazz scene, toured with pop band The Style Council, and recorded ten albums as a leader. Recent projects have ranged from new Charlie Parker arrangements and duo concerts with Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson to collaborations with Indian musicians. In 1993, Speake toured the UK with a quartet including US drummer Paul Motian and bassist Mick Hutton (previously heard on ECM with First House and with Robin Williamson). For the Cheltenham International Jazz Festival seven years later saxophonist, bassist and drummer reconvened, with pianist Bobo Stenson, in Speake's International Quartet. Speake wrote new music specifically to accommodate Motian's and Stenson's different-but-compatible conceptions of jazz. Motian and Stenson, who had never played together before, got along so well that the drummer subsequently joined the Swedish pianist's band, recording the acclaimed 'Goodbye'. After a second UK tour in early 2002 the group travelled to Oslo to record 'Change of Heart' under Manfred Eicher's direction. Successful as the recording was, this first ECM disc will likely be the last from this formation. Paul Motian, now 75, no longer leaves New York, and Mick Hutton has since abandoned the bass - with steel pans and keyboards and composing his priorities now. Recorded 2002 Personnel: Martin Speake (saxophone), Bobo Stenson (piano), Mick Hutton (bass), Paul Motian (drums) AMAZON English alto saxophonist Speake has made some fine albums recently, including the 2004 Jazzizit Charlie Parker release, a freshly conceived tribute to the bebop giant. The excellent Change Of Heart, Speakes first release on ECM, is something else again. Complemented by a first-class rhythm section of Bobo Stenson (piano), Mick Hutton (double-bass) and Paul Motian (drums) Speake delivers a fifty-three minute programme of all-original and largely meditative material. He plays with a deeply considered and affecting poetic intensity of both tone and phrase, casting long and deliciously spacious lines across a richly inviting mix of staggered yet flowing drum phrases and lyrically spun bass and piano figures. There are occasional touches of bop speed here, as in the intriguingly titled Barefaced Thieves and, in more subtle measure, the cross-rhythms of the concluding In Code. But the predominant note of this memorable and highly recommended session is set by the suspended reveries of both the title track and the opening and ultra-soulful The Healing Power of Intimacy. Some titles, these: some music, also. --Michael Tucker REVIEW Speake (for those who don't know him) is an eclectic alto saxophonist, equally at home with cross-cultural projects with classical Indian musicians, reinterpreting the music of Charlie Parker or sessioneering with the Style Council. This band features pianist Bobo Stenson, bassist Mick Hutton and drummer Paul Motian and had its genesis in a Cheltenham festival commission and tour back in 2000. ECM finally put them in the studio in 2002 but it's taken another four years to get this album out, during which time Motian has ceased to tour outside the US and Hutton is sadly no longer able to play due to injury. So while a reunion looks unlikely, this is a rewarding, if muted souvenir of the band's existence. Only one piece is taken at speed; the rest is typically sepulchral ECM fare, injected with various degrees of freedom and powered (if that's the word) by Motian's trademark patterings. Speake has a clear, luminous tone and a penchant for meandering, aching melodies; his pairing with Stenson works effortlessly.Hutton is assured, warm and inventive; this set is a reminder of what a great player we've lost. One for the ECM devotees, perhaps, but lasting pleasures are to be had within. --Peter Marsh Find more music at the BBC This link will take you off Amazon in a new window See more
