Thierry Henry joined AS Monaco in 1993 and had an exceptional first year with the Under-17s, scoring 42 goals. Two years later, on 29 April 1995, he scored his first two D1 goals for Monaco. In 1996/1997, he contributed to the club's French league title (9 goals and 8 assists) and was voted best young player in French football. Aimé Jacquet called him up to the French national team for the first time the following season. During that season, Thierry Henry scored his first European Cup goals and helped ASM reach the semi-finals. His excellent performances earned him a place in the 1998 World Cup squad. A new world champion, Thierry Henry left Monaco for Juventus in the winter mercato of the 1998/1999 season, before becoming Arsenal's all-time top scorer a few years later.
