Please note: We offer a number of size options of reducing T fittinge, which will need to be selected and purchased seperately. These units measure approximately 15cms wide x 15cms deep x 36cms high including the bracket. The bacteria in the reactor require a food source and oxygen to survive, with the food source being the sulphur media in the reactor. The bacteria can only thrive in the low oxygenated water, as such they must obtain the oxygen from another source. The bacteria take the oxygen they need from the Oxygen contained in the nitrate molecule, with the by product being nitrogen gas. (Bad Egg Smell!) Installation: These units must be installed vertically, but can either be installed in a sump, on the floor or on a vertical surface using the bracket supplied.There are a number of ways you can connect the Nitrate filter (reactor) into your system. How this is done depends on how your system is configured. What is required is a steady low pressure of system water, which is controlled via the exit tap (see info below). A simple gravity feed is acceptable if you have a sumped system, by placing the feed pipe into the aquarium and the exit in the sump below the tank. The other option is to put an airline T fitting in your water return pipe, these fittings are manufactured by Aqua Medic and come in three size variations. The final option is to have a micro powerhead producing contiguous low water pressure, which feeds into the reactor. Commissioning: We use these units on some of our stand alone tanks to help maintain low nitrate levels in the system. When the unit is first installed it is advisable to flush the reactor through for five minutes or until the water leaving runs clear discarding this water. Once this is achieved we then leave the unit flushing through for an hour with the return pipe now in the tank, at which point we throttle the reactor back using the micro control valve on the exit side until the water leaving the filter is down to 1-2 drips per second. The unit can take from 7-10 days or up to a number of weeks to commission, and is temperature effected. The lower the temperature the longer the colonisation process will take. Over time it will be possible to increase the flow rate to the optimum level of 10 litres per hour, however we recommend as the flow increases that you wait four days with zero reading before moving on and increasing the flow further. Please note If you exceed at any time the maximum flow rate to maintain a zero nitrate reading leaving the reactor the bacterial colony can crash requiring you to start again. This reactor contains a buffering media to maintain a stable PH on the exit of the reactor, however it is advisable to carry out regular water checks to make sure the water perimeters are correct.
