It’s so simple even your kids can work it out! The colours change from yellow to green to blue which is relative to the ammonia concentration in the tank. You don’t need to carry out any special tests or use any difficult procedures. Seachem Ammonia alert detects less than 0.05ml/l free ammonia. It also gives you enough notice of dangerous ammonia in your water so you can do something about it in plenty of time, ensuring your fish remain fit and healthy!ColoursIf your aquarium has zero free ammonia the colour will be yellow or a faint yellow-green colour. When the sensor is dry it will have a greenish tint to it. When buying an ammonia alert for the first time the dry sensor may take a few days to equilibrate with the water. Once established in your aquarium (i.e after the first few days) the ammonia alert will detect continuous free ammonia after about 15 minutes. Response to decreasing levels of ammonia is slower and could take up to 4 hours to go from toxic to safe once you have removed the ammonia.Lasts a year!Seachem Ammonia Alert lasts a year which is, as far as we know, 9 times as long as competing products! Seachem ammonia alert is small and unobtrusive and won’t detract from the pleasure of looking at your aquarium. The Techy bit As little as 0.02 mg/L of free ammonia will produce a greenish hue on the detector surface. This corresponds to a total ammonia (both ionised and free ammonia) of 0.25 mg/L in marine water at pH 8.3. In freshwater at pH 7.0, this corresponds to 3.6 mg/L total ammonia. Free ammonia is much more toxic than ionised ammonia. As free ammonia, the ALERT colour corresponds to about 0.05 mg/L, ALARM to about 0.2 mg/L, and TOXIC to about 0.5 mg/L. The ALERT concentration is tolerated for several days, ALARM for a few days, and TOXIC is rapidly harmful. For emergency ammonia removal, treat with AmGuard. This product is not recommended for use at acid pH.CareNo special care is needed apart from removing any algae build up with a clean, soft cloth. Try to avoid touching the sensor with your fingers as the oil from your skin could damage it. Do not use soap or bleach etc to clean your alert. When treating your aquarium with any coloured dyed products it is best to remove your alert to avoid that also becoming discoloured. We recommend you read the Ammonia Alert in natural daylight as any red enhancing light could minimise green and blue colours\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
